One crutch

I had the urge to shoot and the conditions were decent last night so I used one hand to grab a lawn chair and tripod and a crutch in the other. I heard dogs barking in the distance and it was the first time I’ve ever been shook by those sounds. Being defenseless in the middle of nowhere isn’t the best feeling in the world; creating this on the other hand…

Iowa is down the street

I shot the sunrise today in this corn field. Ann grew up in Iowa and even she says this area reminds her of Iowa, endless rows of corn for miles. True bliss in every way possible.

I went back tonight and this was the first shot I took, I hung around waiting for the moon to pop out but I heard dogs barking in the not so far distance. These were loud and angry dogs that didn’t seem too happy. I bolted out of there without breaking down my tripod.

Facelift

I’ve been deleting/reorganizing/assessing my work at ajaymalghanphotography. It occurred to me that there was way too much filler and I need to raise my standards on what I present to people. I think self editing is harder than any step in the photographic process: hence why I can’t wait to go to school, the feedback alone is worth the price. Instead of individual galleries of White Sands, Grand Canyon and Yosemite; I have one shot from each place. My Noctography gallery is complete, it will probably take me one week per gallery to decide what stays or goes.

I highly recommend the book, The 4 hour workweek. Tim Ferriss comes off as an arrogant prick on occasions but he has some great points and methods that can help anyone. What helped me the most was distinguishing between being busy and being productive…there’s a huge difference. My work flow always had clarity and defined purpose, now I’m just more precise and efficient.

This is a composite of 53 images (20 sec exp.)taken over the span of 2 hours. The visibility was terrible last night so there’s a lack of contrast, regardless its a good start.

SCAD

I met with an admissions rep from SCAD today so most of my time has been spent hastily putting together an essay and portfolio. There’s no way to say this without being cocky, but choosing what to present from my body of work is alot harder than creating it. Funny how two years ago I set out to be a concert photographer and yet none of that work is in my portfolio. I would take a field over a photo pit any day.

I bought a compass last week in order to tell which way is North. Looks like I missed the bulls eye just by a little tonight. When you’re this good it doesn’t really matter does it?

It only takes one

I took 12 consecutive 5 minute exposures pointing the opposite way from this frame. If you’re standing in the middle of nowhere you have a lot of time to compose a shot; if you pick a clear night there are rarely any variables . I walked in circles for an hour while sizing up this frame, the whole time contemplating whether to move my tripod. I practiced restraint and left the tripod there for the entire hour before taking this shot. I started shooting at 10 and left at 12 since my gear was fogging up and my toes were numb. From now on I’m walking around the site for at least 15 minutes before I shoot. I bet this is going to make a huge impact on my composition.
