One crutch

I had the urge to shoot and the conditions were decent last night so I used one hand to grab a lawn chair and tripod and a crutch in the other. I heard dogs barking in the distance and it was the first time I’ve ever been shook by those sounds. Being defenseless in the middle of nowhere isn’t the best feeling in the world; creating this on the other hand…

This is a composite of 53 images (20 sec exp.)taken over the span of 2 hours. The visibility was terrible last night so there’s a lack of contrast, regardless its a good start.

I bought a compass last week in order to tell which way is North. Looks like I missed the bulls eye just by a little tonight. When you’re this good it doesn’t really matter does it?

I took 12 consecutive 5 minute exposures pointing the opposite way from this frame. If you’re standing in the middle of nowhere you have a lot of time to compose a shot; if you pick a clear night there are rarely any variables . I walked in circles for an hour while sizing up this frame, the whole time contemplating whether to move my tripod. I practiced restraint and left the tripod there for the entire hour before taking this shot. I started shooting at 10 and left at 12 since my gear was fogging up and my toes were numb. From now on I’m walking around the site for at least 15 minutes before I shoot. I bet this is going to make a huge impact on my composition.

I got to see these two fine bands the other night courtesy of Austin, my friend who also happens to have the deepest pocket and fiercest beard since John Henry Bonham. I love everything about Albert Cross and I’m partial because I love Austin’s playing and I love their work ethic. They opened for Oasis back in 2008 which makes me love them even more.

If you were standing near us during BRMC’s set you would have heard this…(Me)”YOU WERE RIGHT,THEY’RE LOUD AS FUCK!”(Austin) I KNOW!.(Me) “DO YOUR EARS RING ANYMORE?(Austin)”NO!”(Me) ME NEITHER AND I DON’T FEEL GOOD ABOUT IT…we then proceeded to do what most drummers once their confronted with a problem they have no solution to-shrug and go back to their beer.

I took this tonight…alot goes on in 30 seconds.

This shot is page 32 of The Long Way Home. I figured since I won’t be shooting anything worth mentioning for another 2 months or so, I would write about some of my previous work. I took this shot at a park which has a view of the airports of SF, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento. I started shooting at this park once I got a timer on my birthday in 2008. Unfortunately it got cold around that time so my gear would fog up after two hours or so; regardless I still learned a ton shooting in that field. I wanted to do a project that involved layering shots from all the flights that go in and out of all the airports in the Bay Area over the span of a night. However many flights that you think are going in/out multiply it by 10 and that’s an accurate number.

The most awkward aspect of shooting here was the location; it was across the bay from Foster City. I’ll leave it at that.

3 min exposure. If you look hard enough you can see the Bay Bridge at the line of the horizon. I took this picture and yet somehow I just noticed it…I miss California hard.
